A beach house under the baobab trees

May 11, 2022

Nestled into a cliff on a Kenyan soaring coastal beach is Sirai. A private beach house paradise designed around a series of inter leading courtyards, anchored around ancient baobab trees.

This private almost secret retreat can be found on a peaceful cliff top location overlooking the Indian Ocean. The nearest town to the residence is Kilifi, a coastal town situated 56km north east of Mombasa, on the southern side of Kilifi Creek where the Goshi River reaches the Indian Ocean.

Designed to capture the gentle breeze as it rolls in from the ocean, its interiors and styling are infused with the flavours of the Kenyan coast.

The main house is arranged around a beautiful open veranda which boasts a sweeping view of the infinity pool and the sparkling ocean beyond, framed by ancient baobab trees. Private and secluded, Sirai Beach is a beachside paradise, the perfect place for lazy days, poolside parties and happy memories.

The hierarchy of spaces are arranged to allow for uninterrupted and multiple views of the Kenyan coast and Indian Ocean. The material choices were informed from the local vernacular use of Coral stone, Lamu plaster, and Makuti thatch. The large openable covered verandas to cater for lounge space and allow for the cooling sea breeze to flow through and reach all areas.

It was built to complement Sirai House in the Borana Conservancy in the Laikipia region of Kenya, creating an unbeatable private beach-bush combination, the same exceptional standards of contemporary design, style, comfort and superb gastronomy characterising both houses. Having found a peaceful, elevated ocean plot, the house has been designed in contemporary Swahili coastal style.

Sirai Beach is available for hire all year round and sleeps 12 guests in six individual suites dotted across within the 4.5 acre grounds, all with sea views. The master suite stretches across the entire first floor of the main house, while the others are located in gorgeous garden cottages on either side, all offering captivating views of the ocean.

They are decorated in a contemporary coastal style, equipped with silent ceiling fans and air-conditioning to keep you at the perfect temperature.

The residence prides itself on providing 400-thread Egyptian cotton for its linen, sourced directly from the Nile Valley. Each suite has a spacious bathroom with a polished concrete bath, twin basins and indoor and outdoor showers. The bathroom products are made with essential oils to the owners’ specification by a community enterprise in Nanyuki. All suites also feature an open veranda and an outside staircase leading to a covered private roof terrace furnished with inviting day beds – just the place for an afternoon siesta, lulled by the gentle ocean breeze.

Sirai Beach is available to rent on an exclusive occupancy basis. The minimum stay is three nights and is available for booking all year round.
